Inertial & Navigation Sensors

Inertial sensors report rotation, acceleration and heading — how the equipment is moving and which way it is pointing, without needing anything outside the vehicle. Use one when a platform has to stay level while it moves, when an antenna has to hold a bearing, or when satellite signal is lost. If the equipment sits still and you only need the angle it rests at, a tilt sensor answers that question for a fraction of the price.

ATI builds 10 inertial and navigation products in four types: inertial measurement units (IMU), tilt-compensated electronic compasses, fiber optic gyroscopes (FOG) and integrated navigation systems (INS). The range runs from a $99 six-axis MEMS IMU to a fiber optic gyro holding 0.3°/h bias stability, and both gyros are ITAR-free, which removes export and import licensing steps on international projects.

Filter by type, axis count, output interface and supply voltage. The type decides almost everything else, so start there. Typical uses are unmanned vehicles and aircraft, robotics and AGV platforms, marine and underwater navigation, surveying and mapping, stabilized platforms and antenna pointing.

Questions we get asked

Why does a fiber optic gyro cost so much more than a MEMS IMU?

Drift. A MEMS gyro is a vibrating silicon structure, and its zero point wanders with temperature and time. A fiber optic gyro measures rotation from the phase shift of light travelling both ways around a coil, and it has no moving part at all.

The numbers show the gap directly. The MEMS unit here holds bias stability below 2°/h. The single-axis fiber optic gyro holds 0.3°/h. If your system corrects its heading often from another source, the MEMS unit is enough. If it has to stay accurate on its own for minutes or hours, the drift figure is what you are paying for.

Do I need satellite positioning as well?

An IMU or a gyro on its own tells you how the equipment is moving, not where it is. Integrate that motion over time and the position error grows, because every small bias error accumulates.

That is what the INS-4533-R10 solves. It combines fiber optic gyros, accelerometers and a satellite receiver, so the satellite fix corrects the drift and the inertial part carries the solution through tunnels, urban canyons and other gaps in coverage. If you already run your own receiver and fusion software, an IMU or a gyro alone may be all you need from us.
