Inductor Kits

An SMD inductor kit puts a full ladder of inductance values on the bench, sorted and labelled. Use one when you are tuning a filter, bringing up a switching converter or matching an RF stage and the value changes several times before the circuit settles. Worth knowing

  • L0805-85VALUE-100PC reads as: 0805 package, 85 values, 100 pieces of each. The 0402 and 1008 kits offer 20, 50 and 100 piece options; the 0805 kit is stocked in the 100 piece configuration.
  • Package size is about current, not just space. A 1008 part has a larger core and thicker winding than an 0402, so it carries more current before it saturates. That is why the 1008 kit suits power work and the 0402 kit suits signal work, even where both cover similar inductance values.
  • Every value has its own lidded, labelled bin. This matters more with inductors than with resistors or capacitors, because most SMD inductors carry no marking at all — once a part is loose on the bench, nothing on it tells you what it is.

The output inductor is the part you are most likely to change during bring-up, and the one whose value the datasheet calculation gets only approximately right.

Filter and RF matching work

Matching networks and LC filters are fitted, measured and refitted. Having the neighbouring values in the box is what makes that an afternoon rather than a week.

Frequently asked questions

Isat or Irms — which current rating should I design to?

Both, for different reasons. Irms is the current that heats the part to its temperature limit, so it governs continuous operation. Isat is the current at which the core begins to saturate and the inductance falls away — often sharply. In a switching converter the peak current, including ripple and any startup surge, must stay below Isat, while the average current must stay below Irms. A design that respects only the average figure can saturate on every switching cycle and still look fine on a multimeter.

Why do inductors have such wide tolerances compared with resistors?

Inductance depends on core material and winding geometry rather than on a trimmed film, and core permeability varies from batch to batch and with temperature. ±20 % is normal for a power inductor and tighter grades exist for signal work. The practical consequence is that circuits should be designed to tolerate the spread rather than assume the marked value — and it is another reason a kit earns its place, since the value you calculated and the value that works are often one step apart.

Shielded or unshielded — does it matter?

It matters when the inductor sits near something sensitive. An unshielded part radiates its field into the surrounding board, which can couple into high-impedance nodes, analog front ends or nearby inductors. A shielded part contains most of that field at the cost of a little size and price. In a converter tucked away in a corner, unshielded is usually fine. Next to an ADC input or a feedback node, it usually is not.

Which package should I take for a general-purpose bench?

0805, if your work is mixed. It is small enough to fit real layouts, large enough to handle with tweezers, and the 85-value kit is the widest ladder we stock. Take 0402 if your boards are dense and your inductors are in signal paths; take 1008 if you spend your time on power conversion and need the current handling that a larger body gives you.
