Benchtop, 1U or 2U?

Same job, three ways to house it. Two things decide it: where the unit lives, and whether a person or a computer sets the voltage.

Most of the negative-output models live here, with one more in 1U. Set the voltage with the dial, read it off the display, lock the dial so it cannot be nudged.
1U rack 6 models · $1,839–$2,499 1 kV to 10 kV 4–50 mA It goes into a rack and something else is driving it. Unlike the benchtop units, the rack versions accept remote adjustment — so the voltage can be set by your test system rather than by hand. Fixed installations, automated test, production equipment. One negative-output model; the rest are positive.
2U rack 10 models · $2,599–$5,699 1 kV to 50 kV 10–300 mA You need serious power in a rack. The extra height buys voltage and current the 1U format cannot deliver — up to 50 kV and 300 mA. Remote adjustment as well, same as the 1U units. Positive output, apart from the two isolated models — those float, so you choose the polarity when you wire them.

Operating a benchtop unit:

  • Turn the dial to zero before switching the high voltage on.  Then bring it up slowly while watching the display. The dial is a ten-turn potentiometer, so it takes several full turns to cross the range — that is deliberate, it gives you fine control.
  • Lock the dial once you are there:  a separate lock stops the setting drifting because someone brushed past it.
  • Check how the display is scaled:  on some models the reading is multiplied by a fixed factor rather than shown in volts directly. The datasheet for your model says which.
  • Ground it, and wait after switching off:  the chassis must be reliably earthed, and internal capacitors need around five minutes to discharge before the high-voltage lead is safe to touch.
  • Naming:  A1U or A2U at the front of the code is the rack height; BT = benchtop, RM = rack mount. Polarity sits before the voltage — P positive, N negative, PN bipolar. A code with no polarity letter is a positive-output model, unless it carries an I before RM — that marks an isolated rack unit, where you set the polarity yourself. The CO2 laser supplies do not follow this scheme — see the group below.

One group in here is not a general-purpose supply:

  • ACHV40WBT, ACHV50WBT and ACHV60WBT are CO2 laser tube supplies.  They drive a laser tube directly and are sized by tube wattage, not output voltage — the number in the part code is the laser power they suit, from 25 W up to 70 W. Everything else on this page is sized by volts.
  • They behave differently too:  the output responds in under a millisecond to a 0–5 V analog or PWM signal, so laser power can be modulated as you engrave or cut. They also provide a 5 V 1 A output to run your controller board — the 40 W unit adds a 24 V rail as well — switch between 110 V and 220 V mains, and use forced-air cooling.
  • Open-circuit protection instead of arc protection:  if the laser tube ruptures, the supply shuts down rather than being destroyed with it. An integrated discharge resistor drains the residual voltage within about two seconds of power-off — but earth the enclosure through a three-pin socket and treat it as live regardless.
  • Buying for a laser engraver or cutter?  Match the supply to your tube’s rated wattage, keep the tube water-cooled whenever it is firing, and never run the high-voltage output open circuit. Ask us if you are unsure which one your tube needs.

Questions about this series

Can I control these from a computer?

On the rack units, yes — both the 1U and 2U versions support remote adjustment, so the output can be set by your test system or controller instead of by hand.

The benchtop units are front-panel only: a dial and a display, no remote input. If you want a programmable supply in a small package rather than a rack, a DC-DC module takes a 0–5 V control signal and costs far less. Tell us the interface you need and we will point you at the right one.

Why is this series the only one that reaches 2 A?

Because it draws from mains rather than a low-voltage rail. A 12 V module would need to pull impractical input current to deliver that much high-voltage power. If your load needs hundreds of milliamps or more, this is the series to look at.

What does the I mean in a rack part number?

It marks an isolated output. Both output poles float clear of the input, so you decide which one is your reference: ground the negative pole and the output is positive, ground the positive pole and it is negative. One part covers both polarities.

The isolation is specified per model — A2UHVAC3KV50MAIRM is rated to withstand 5 kV between either output pole and the input. Because the outputs are independent, isolated units can also be stacked in series to add their voltages. Tell us what you are stacking and we will confirm the arrangement before you order.

What input voltage do they accept?

It varies by model — the range covers roughly 90 to 240 V AC, but individual units are specified for a narrower window such as 100–240 V or 220–240 V. Check the product page before ordering for a different region, and tell us the local supply voltage if you are unsure.

How stable is the output?

Specified at under 0.5% per minute short term and 1% per hour long term, with a temperature coefficient below 0.05% per °C. That suits testing, electrostatic work and general bias applications. For a calibrated voltage held over hours, see the X-ray series, which is two orders of magnitude tighter.

Do you have a supply for a CO2 laser tube?

Yes — ACHV40WBT, ACHV50WBT and ACHV60WBT, covering tubes from 25 W to 70 W. These are sized by the laser’s wattage rather than by output voltage, respond to a 0–5 V or PWM control signal in under a millisecond so you can modulate power while cutting, and include a 5 V 1 A output for your controller board, with a 24 V rail as well on the 40 W unit.

They also reach over 90% efficiency, well above the rest of this catalogue. Match the supply to your tube’s rating, keep the tube water-cooled whenever it is firing, and never run the high-voltage output open circuit.

Can you build one to a different specification?
